Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to introduce the use of phase-field (phase fraction) modelling techniques to investigate and simulate dynamical effects in nonlinear phase change alloys used in advanced data storage technology for read/write optical disks and random access memory arrays. The main tools so far have been microstructure simulation of the physical processes of aggregation, crystal growth and nucleation. A phase-field approach should yield model; allow much simpler and robust modelling of phase changes involving spatial nonuniformities such as localised heating and fronts between different phases
