Summary on Grant Application Form
This travel grant is to made to support the PI to visit premier experimental centres in the USA that are the going to be the nodes in the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES). The NEES network is an extremely exciting prospect that aims to build a collaboratory for earthquake engineering simulation of which the dynamic centrifuge modelling is an integral part. The collaboratory offers exciting possibilities of tele-observation, tele-operation and tele-participation in the experimental activities of various NEES nodes from remote sites. The PI has extensive experience of over 12 years in dynamic centrifuge modelling at Cambridge. The overall objectives of the visit are to help the PI in developing the next generation dynamic centrifuge testing facilities at Cambridge and to help Cambridge join the NEES network as an international node. The proposed visit will give the PI an opportunity to take part in many exciting developments in the dynamic centrifuge testing including new 2-D earthquake actuators, 4 DOF in-flight robots and MEMS based instrumentation that are currently happening at UC Davis, RPI and Cornell. The visit will also help the PI to learn the necessary metadata structures and visual information exchange protocols that will help Cambridge to join the NEES grid. The proposed visit will also be exploited by the PI to carry out data mining activities of existing centrifuge test database and conduct dynamic centrifuge tests at UC Davis to carry out research nn the Earthquake frequency affects on excess nore pressure response and liquefaction in saturated sand beds.
