Summary on Grant Application Form
Scaling analysis shows that it is possible to describe the roughness of electrodeposited thin Cu films of arbitrary thickness at any length scale using only 5 parameters. Earlier experiments showed that two of these parameters are universal, while two more may be derived from measurements of a single film. The remaining exponent, beta-local, is in many ways the most interesting, as it is associated with anomalous scaling (1). We believe that the combination of careful experiments under well-determined hydrodynamic conditions and numerical modelling will enable us to predict beta-local, and at the same time answer one of the longest-standing questions in electrodeposition, namely precisely how mass transport in the electrolyte affects the surface roughness. Further work will be carried out to relate other scaling parameters to e.g. overpotential and crystallite size, while experiments on additional systems will establish the extent to which results can be generalized to different electrolytes and different metals.(1) S. Huo and W. Schwarzacher, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 256 (2001).
