Summary on Grant Application Form |
GaN-based green, blue, white and UV LEDs are expected to last for 100,000 hours (11 years). However, many are found in practice to fail prematurely. This proposal seeks to understand, explain and rectify this important problem. In collaboration with Forge Europa and Thomas Swan, we will perform a detailed assessment of failure mechanisms using a range of advanced electron microscopy techniques, including in-situ studies. We will also carry out modelling of temperature distributions and then process LEDs and special structures which should have the theoretical lifetime of 100,000 hours.
