Summary on Grant Application Form |
Storage networking technology is at a crossroads as there are many factors which could induce change and enable new architectures and technology to be introduced into the marketplace. It is expected that performance improvements will only be realised by a combination of hardware acceleration and revolutionary software and system design and that new architectures for use in storage networking will result. The aim of the project is to explore, through simulation, the design space of storage network architectures, to estimate the performance of different architectural configurations and thus to highlight areas where there is potential to improve performance by judicious use of new or emerging technologies and to explore the possibilities for new design ideas.Simulation models of possible design alternatives will be created and their performance explored. These models will be parameterised so that the effects on performance of variations in component speeds, buffer and memory sizes, etc., can be assessed by running sets of simulations in which the various parameters take different values. Taken together with information about technology trends and expected future availability of system components this information will ultimately help to guide product development.
