Summary on Grant Application Form |
A combined experimental and computational programme of research is proposed to study the turbulence physics of under-expanded supersonic jets and to develop new turbulence-modelling elements directed specifically at the interaction between turbulence and compressibility. A characteristic feature of underexpanded jets is the presence of a complex pattern of normal and oblique shocks which cause major changes to the mean and turbulence structure of the jets. Experiments are to be undertaken for cold and hot jets at NPR of up to 4, and field data for velocity and turbulence statististics are to be collected and analysed. Modelling studies will initially focus on compressible shear layers and shock-affected flow using earlier measurements as well as DNS data. Issues of compressibility/turbulence interaction will be investigated at this stage, and improved moidelling proposals will be investigated. Computational studies would then be undertaken for the jets examined experimentally in order to identify the merits and limitations of the improved modelling proposals. While underexpanded jet form the primary focal point of the proposal, the research has a strongly generic flavour, and is pertinenbt to all compressible shear flows, whether in aerospace or in energy-conversion applications.
