Living organisms synthesise most of their required metabolites by a programmed sequence of enzyme-catalysed reactions that show high speci towards the different intermediates involved. Successful mimicking of this strategy using chemical catalysts would provide synthetic chemists w conceptually new approach to the design of new reactions; moreover, in the long term, it could also provide economically attractive industrialprocesses that mimimise the use of chemicals and solvents, the production of waste and processing time.Although the concept of multicomponent catalysis is very attractive, the approach presents many challenges and it is perhaps not surprising that there are only a handful of examples of its successful execution to date.In this proposal, we present five ideas for the concurrent operation of two catalysts. The proposed systems, which effectively represent five new reactions, are dominated by the Pauson-Khand reaction, partly because we have recently developed a robust and effective catalyst for this reac that operates under mild and neutral conditions and has been shown to be effective on a large scale, and partly because it is an attractive carbo carbon bond-forming reaction, forming synthetically important cyclopentenones from an alkyne, an alkene and carbon monoxide.
