Summary on Grant Application Form |
We request a Platform grant from EPSRC to support our synthetic research programme in Controlled-Structure Water-Soluble Block Copolymers over the next four years. Three out of our eight current Research Council grants (totalling over 550 K) end this calendar year, so continuity is a particularly significant problem for our group. We propose to use this Platform grant to maintain our internationally leading position in: (1) 'schizophrenic' block copolymers; (2) biocompatible block copolymers; (3) shell cross-linked micelles; (4) stimuli-responsive polymeric surfactants; (5) polyelectrolytic block copolymers. A range of possible applications will be explored, particularly in the biomedical and inorganic materials fields. For example, we intend to extend our current micelle loading/release studies of hydrophobic drugs (GR/R13784) to include biocompatible block copolymer micelles and shell crosslinked micelles. Detailed characterisation studies of block copolymer micelles, particularly those adsorbed at interfaces, will be carried out using our informal network of UK and overseas collaborators. Various industrial sponsors (e.g. Biocompatibles, Laporte, Unilever, ICI and Avecia) will also be beneficiaries of this programme.
