Summary on Grant Application Form
Robotics is a highly relevant research area in the U.K. The number of application areas in industry and leisure are increasing. In order to make the most of these opportunities, robotic systems must be developed which overcome the current problems of perception, action, manipulation and power constraints, to produce robots which act in dynamic, uncertain environments. A growing research community in the U.K. is successfully applying biological inspiration to the above problems. However, due to the subject's interdisciplinary nature (robotics, engineering, artificial intelligence, comp science, cognitive science, material science, psychology, biology, ethology, neuroscience, and other related fields), the community is fragmented, disparate and could benefit from input from both industry and academia. It is the challenge of bringing together researchers from so many different areas which this network hopes to address. We aim to do this by; providing a dedicated forum for communication and exchange of ideas through organised symposia and workshops; organising summer school for young researchers; providing a web-based resource centre; facilitating publications and collaborations across a range of related research disciplines.
