Summary on Grant Application Form
This application is seeking support to investigate the human visual perception of exterior lighting as used in pedestrian areas and subsidiary roads. This research has received strong support from commercial organisations within the lighting industry because it will provide objective analysis of anecdotal evidence that the use of whiter light in these areas produces a brighter and clearer environment, and that this permits a relaxation of illuminance targets which in turn gives savings in energy consumption. The proposed project will compare light sources of different colour characteristics by illuminating a large space to exterior lighting design standards, and this space rated in appearance by observers. The Institution of Lighting Engineers (ILE) is considering a change to design guidance to account for the white light effect, and this research would contribute evidence to support the proposed change.
