High shear mixer granulators are widely used in chemical and process industries. However, the structure, properties and strength of the granuleschange when the granulators are scaled up. This is most undesirable for product functionality and specifications. It is therefore proposed to investigatethe influence of the scale of operation on the granule characteristics. The granulation process will be analysed both experimentally and theoretically atseveral length scales from single primary particle level to single granule level and ultimately to the level of bulk, behaviour. The granule structure,properties and strength will be characterised by a variety of techniques as a function of the scale of operation: T` he macroscopic flow patterns in thegranulators will be modelled and the model predictions will be compared with results obtained by the use of advanced experimental techniques(tomography and high speed motion analysis). This will provide reliable input data for the simulation of granule structure, properties and strength byDistinct Element Method and hence a fundamental base for the development of reliable scale-up rules.Key words: Granulator, Wet, Shear, Structure, Distinct Element Method, Scale-up, Numerical simulation, Microscopic behaviour, Macroscopic behaviour
