The proposed work programme will build on the foundations provided by previous work of the applicant in order to further an understanding of multiple classifier systems, especially with regard to the theoretical foundations of multi-classifier processing and the links between analytical and empirical approaches to optimal design exploiting novel perspectives on current issues in pattern recognition methodology.The specific aim of this proposal is to develop and evaluate a novel framework for the effective analysis and subsequent synthesis of systems involv the fusion of multiple classifiers. To illustrate the generic nature of this approach, we propose to use a variety of data from different domains reflectin the diversity of characteristics met in real world applications. Work is to be carried out using handwritten character databases (on which we have extensive expertise), biometric data (e.g. speech, face, and fingerprint recognition tasks), as well as publicly available databases for classification task The work programme will encompass both theoretical evaluation of multiclassifier processing and the development of practical tools to extend and enhance our knowledge of the optimal design of pattern classifiers for general application to complex classification problems.
