Recently, the Heriot-Watt MBE group has developed a technique which allows metal sulphides, that would normally grow in the rocksalt crystal structure, to be grown instead in the zincblende crystal structure. This technique has been sucessfuly applied to both magnesium sulphide and manganese sulphide. Here, we aim to show that this technique can be used to grow a series of transition metal sulphides compounds and multilayer structures based on chromium sulphide, iron (II) sulphide and manganese sulphide. The compounds and structures chosen are those which have been predicted by Professor Dietl (Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw) to show ferromagnetic behaviour and have high Curie transition temperatures.Once grown, samples would be supplied to Professor Dietl's group for measurements of their magnetic susceptability. These measurements will determine whether these transition metal sulphides can play a part in more complex spintronic devices.
