Robotics systems form one of the most compelling and entertaining mechanisms for attracting the attention of the general public, and particularly the young. This is further enhanced when the robot exhibits human characteristics and is interactive. Having achieved this interest there is then a tremendous opportunity to promote science and engineering.This project will focus on the design, construction and use of a interactive dextrous robotic hand linked to a haptic (tactile) control `glove' as a vehicle for increasing awareness of this new technology, and the showing the future challenges and potential of engineering, robotics and haptics. Features of the activity will include:a). Display/Exhibition activitiesi). A dextrous robotic hand with 4 finger and a thumb for continuous operational display in the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.ii). A haptic tactile interface (glove) to control the motions of the robot hand. Both displays will include relevant high quality publicity materials.b). LectureLectures primarily to school/college groups to explain robotic and haptic technology through the exhibits. These lectures will be primarily in the Museum but other audiences will be sought.iii). Interactive displayThe robotic hand and haptic glove combined in an interactive display where visitors can use the glove to control the action eg playing a musical keyboard of manoeuvring to grasp a balliv) WebsiteAn Interactive website.
