Summary on Grant Application Form |
Our activities so far have centred on the University , with extremely successful Maths Club and Public Lectures taking place there. We propose to extend this activity into schools and sixth form colleges, but with a major diifference. For some years now the Liverpool Mathematical Society has been developing a 'Mathematics Roadshow' for the lower school years, which is designed to involve school students actively in significant mathematics, to promote group activity, and to be fun. We plan to extend, broaden and develop this for Years 11 - 13, associating it with lectures relevant to AS and A level mathematics but drawing on the research of the investigators and their research teams. The material will be produced by a group of students, teachers and academics and those ' delivering' the material will be drawn from undergraduates, postgraduates, research and academic staff as well as school teachers and PGCE students. The whole is to be coordinated by a retired lecturer. Bearing in mind the alarming decline in AS and A level matematics entries, we shall aim to promote mathematics as an enjoyable and useful activity at and beyond school.
