Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposal is to develop know-how and manufacturing capability in cryogenic electronics for the emerging technologies of quantum scale computing and associated quantum nanotechnology. Many of the most exciting developments in quantum devices need to operate at extremely low temperatures, and must therefore be supported by several stages of electronics, operating at successively lower temperatures. We shall develop generic electronics platforms, so that as new technologies emerge they can be integrated to make full-scale computers. Very low power circuits operating at appropriate cryogenic temperatures will be developed, evaluated, and integrated with quantum scale processors. Candidate nanoelectronic technologies will be measured and complete circuit designs will be characterized; their effectiveness will be demonstrated using established nanofabricated quantum electronic circuits. In this way we shall provide a technological infrastructure that will give UK scientists and industries a headstart in the development of new kinds of nanotechnology and their commercial exploitation.
