Summary on Grant Application Form
The Optoelectronic Devices and Materials group at the University of Surrey is the world-leading group using hydrostatic pressure to gain underst of the physical processes limiting the performance of advanced optoelectronic devices. Our extensive and close collaboration with industry has I the manufacture of improved devices, including the now-ubiquitous strained layer semiconductor laser. Following our recent strategic re-organic within the new JIF-funded Advanced Technology Institute (ATI), we have a unique opportunity to exploit the multidisciplinary expertise available i research groups of the ATI and to extend our techniques to new materials for optoelectronics and other applications. This Platform Grant will prc essential continuity funding for postdoctoral researchers at the core of our present optoelectronics research, as well as technical support for our relocation into custom-designed laboratories and our expansion of activities. A senior experimental postdoctoral researcher will support the development of improved pressure apparatus and its application to new fields of study including spectroscopy with mid-infrared and femtosecond pulses, and will also support pilot high pressure studies of new materials ranging from amorphous semiconductors to foods. Funds for travel will the development of international links, including a European network, and a postgraduate training school.
