Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research will investigate optimal, automated ad-hoc network design for low power devices which use Bluetooth. This is a new, low cost, open specification wireless architecture supported by major developers for short range ad-hoc connectivity. Optimisation of so-called Bluetooth scattern a computationally intensive multi-objective problem. This will be modelled and suitable objectives will be defined. An optimisation framework, comprising exact, heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms, will be developed and examined. The performance characteristics of near optimal scatternets (produced from the optimisation framework) will be analysed. These results will be important for informing the development of decentralised protocols for scatternet formation and routing. These remain open in the Bluetooth specification, and the design of such protocols is area of much academic and commercial interest. The results from the research will enable performance benchmarking and comparison of proposed decentralised protocols for scatternet formation and subsequent routing in networks formed from static devices.
