Summary on Grant Application Form |
From mobile phones to the internet, optical fibre telecommunications technology ;has changed lives immeasurably in the last decade. Yet most people have little appreciation of the science and engineering expertise behind their latest gadget.EPSRC funds a substantial amount of research into all areas of communications }technology. This project seeks to enthral the younger generation, who will benefit most from these developments, the science that lies behind the amazing progress that '` has been made. The topic of telecommunications has very recently been introduced into GCSE and A - level examinations. To date there is little appropriate material available for schools This project seeks to address this need and inspire students with the ;excitement behind optoelectronic engineering. The project will develop a web site and associated CD-rom to be mailed free to all !schools in the UK. The content will be related to the science and technology that has been developed from EPSRC support in the world renowned Optoelectronic Research Centre at the University of Southampton. The web site will comprise five sections: 'i ;`Everything You Need to Know about Telecoms' - resume of syllabus requirements; !`Try this at School' - highlights of recent undergraduate student projects; `ScIProFiles' - interviews with people working at the cutting edge;'Take a Walk' - a virtual tour of key labs within the Optoelectronics Research Centre !showing, for example, how optical fibres are made and used; Teachers' Zone' with answers to problems set for students, ideas for school projects and direct contact to experts at Southampton.. _ _
