Summary on Grant Application Form |
Cross sections for the ionisation of atomic hydrogen and helium by low energy (1-20 keV) antiprotons are to be measured using a recently constructed experimental system. The experiment is to be performed at the CERN Antiproton Decelerator/ASACUSA facility where 5 MeV antiprotons will be decelerated, stored and cooled prior to injection into the ionisation apparatus. An atomic hydrogen source developed and tested at Queen's University Belfast has been successfully installed and operated on the apparatus currently being tested in Aarhus University. Previous experimental data extend from 1 MeV to 30 keV and disagree significantly with theory in the lower energy regime so there is an urgent need for data at low energies. The results will impact on possible methods to promote trapping of cold antihydrogen.
