Summary on Grant Application Form
The research outlined in this proposal involves collaboration between two established research groups. The team at the University of Strathclyde is a large, multidisciplinary group, with expertise in mathematical modelling and array technology. The team at the University of Warwick is also active in ultrasonics research, with particular experience in capacitive transducers and micromachining methods for device fabrication. The proposal combines the particular expertise of the two groups, to perform fundamental investigations into electro-mechanical wave interaction within micromachined capacitive arrays. This will enable new designs, with the objective of realising the considerable imaging potential of such arrays in both air and water environments. If successful, the research will enable the development of new ultrasonic imaging systems, with applications in biomedicine, underwater sonar, process control and non-destructive evaluation.
