Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall aim of this research is the improvement of safety assessment for ground anchorages in soils and the development of design criteria for such anchorages. There is currently a distinct lack of knowledge in two separate areas of ground anchorage control and design. The first area is the dynamic performance of ground anchorages to impulse or other dynamic loading, and the second area is the optimum choice of anchorage design for a particular set of site conditions. This proposal will address both these areas of concern for anchorages used in soils which will combine the expertise in rock bolt anchorage dynamics at the University of Aberdeen with the expertise in soil and centrifuge modelling at the University of Dundee. A 1/10-scaled model of a retaining wall/embankment will be built which will contain a number of anchorages. This approach will enable a number of experiments to be conducted at relatively little cost with anchorages of different geometry configurations placed in different soils.Alongside the experimental work, a model of rock anchorages which has been developed by one of the applicants will be modified to include the nonlinear soil properties required to effectively model soil anchorages.
