Summary on Grant Application Form
The following programme will be carried out by the PI and the two visiting fellows on beamline MPW6.1 at the SRS, Daresbury during approved direct acces beamtime ref. 38020 from 12/11/2002 to 1 /1212002Following the success of a preliminary study on OCS, we now wish to make a detailed study of the structure in the S 2p1J2 threshold electron feature and obtain unprecedented detail in the pre-edge region. We aim to resolve the near-edge structure in the threshold electron spectra in sufficient detail to allow an unambiguous theoretical study to be carried out into the Auger decay channel interactions hinted at in previous, low resolutionstudies. By collecting threshold electron - ion coincidence time-of-flight data associated with each of the spin-orbit split S 2p thresholds, we aim to identify differences in fragmentation as a function of spin-orbit state. This experiment will be highly relevant since, although we have seen effects in molecular ion decay relating to the location of an atom within a molecule, until now we have not had sufficient resolution to observe the effect of initial total electron angular momentum. In the C 1 s ionisation region, we will study the threshold electron spectra from shake-up satellites. This will be relevant given our recent work examining similar structures in C02 in which evidence of electron dynamics effects was deduced.
