Summary on Grant Application Form |
The equipment base of the Unit for Stress & Damage Characterisation is substantial, however without certain key staff the Unit simply cannot function nor technique development continue; instead core competencies will be lost. The initial JIF project funding is about to finish (Nov. 2002), in addition we have attracted parallel traditional 3yr project grant funding to build up our PDRA manpower and project portfolio. This has left the Unit vulnerable to short gaps in funding which, without Platform Grant funding, will result in the loss of key staff. No member of staff will be funded entirety on the Platform Grant, rather it will be used in parallel with traditional industry, research council and EU funding sources. The current & proposed activities encompass the core engineering material science involved with the measurement, modelling and influence of residual stress and damage. The Grant will:* ensure vital contiguity of staff contracts and thus maintain the USDC as a key resource* enable us to continue our work on standards and validation * enable scoping/initiation of new research areasFurthermore the funding will allow us to make our facilities more available to academic teams across the UK.
