A stochastic morphodynamic stability model will be developed. The purpose of the model will be to simulate the initial response of a coastal area to the effects of beach nourishment, both in the form of the recharge itself and as a coastal extraction site. The model concept will be that of a linear stability model, based on the shallow water equations (plus a bed evolution equation), and will incorporate a nourishment and/or extraction so that the initial evolution of the nourishment / extraction and the response of the coastal region can be modeled. This model will be developed, tested and then used to investigate the effects of generic nourishments and extractions. Thereafter, the effects of random variations in morphology, sediment characteristics and hydrodynamics will be included, by characterising them as stochastic variables within the stability model. The resulting model will be tested using Monte Carlo simulations against existing ensemble-averaged models, and then used to investigate the effects of random variations on the nourishment. Lastly, the model will be validated against high quality field data of beach nourishment / nearshore extraction.
