Summary on Grant Application Form |
Quasicrystals are aperiodic solids having non-crystallographic symmetries and unusual structural and electronic properties. Most quasicrystals are trimetallic, and their structural complexity makes studies of their fundamental properties difficult. This proposal is for the growth and characterisation of the properties of structurally simpler aperiodic systems, constructed using the surfaces of quasicrystals as templates in adsorption and growth processes. We will investigate three classes of aperiodic systems: nanostructures, 2-d overlayers, and 3-d epilayers. The growth and properties of these systems will be characterised in a multitechnique approach using variable temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy, photoemission, x-ray scattering, helium atom scattering, and low energy electron diffraction. Their geometric, dynamic and electronic properties will be measured and contrasted with the properties of comparable periodic (crystalline) systems. The relative simplicity of these systems (compared to quasicrystals) should allow us to isolate those aspects of their behaviour which are due to their aperiodic nature.
