Summary on Grant Application Form
Our research on strain-balanced Quantum Well Solar Cells (QWSCS) under grant GR/N35434 is making very good progress. Our collaborator on the materials aspects of this cell, Dr.Mazzer, is a Senior Researcher with the Italian CNR and an internationally recognised expert in the application of electron beam and optical microscopy techniques to the study of strained alloy heterostructures and quantum wells. The CNR is prepared to give him leave of absence on full pay. A fellowship to supplement his salary to London levels would greatly enhance the final year of our project and help us to demonstrate the practical and commercial viablity of our cell in a concentrator system. We will be able to make use of the new reactor at Shefffield to demonstrate that our cell could enhance the AM1.5 effiiciency of a tandem concentrator cell well above 30% and have advantages under high light concentration. Dr Mazzer brings with him considerable experience of European collaboration, including the coordination of a Framework V project involving strain-balanced photovoltaic cells. In particular he will assist our collaboration with the leading European space solar cell company CESI. Elecron beam microscopy facilites of the Centre for Elecronic Materials and Devices will be available for Dr Mazzer. Project GR/N35434 will benefit considerably from the more immediate feedback Dr Mazzer will be able to provide in College rather than Lecce.
