This proposal responds to a request by EPSRC to develop a programme of work for the consortium of academic and non-academic partners con under the theme 'Pollutants in the Urban Environment' (PUrE). The main work programme is not expected to start until mid to late-2004. This pr( is for an interim scoping study whose aim is to develop the framework, themes and objectives of the later programme in consultation with a wide of stakeholders. The principal research task of the scoping study is to define an integrated assessment framework capable of:1. mapping the flow of pollutants associated with human activities in the urban environment; 2. modelling the fate and transport of chemicals in the environment;3. assess the impacts of urban pollutants on human and ecological health.In particular, the scoping study will develop the basis for a mass balance model appropriate for tracking the sources and emissions of key polluta the urban environment and illustrate the application of this model for selected pollutants in selected case studies.The research itself will be conducted in three overlapping stages. The first stage will entail a widespread consultation exercise involving a variety stakeholders and end users; the second will involve the development of the integrated assessment framework, and in particular the mass balance component; the third will be to define the boundaries, aims and objectives of the full Work Programme and to write the proposal.
