Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposal is to transfer techniques developed in reflection photoelasticity and thermoelasticity to establish appropriate generic methodologies for extracting fracture mechanics information from an analysis of surface deformation. This will be tested and validated using exemplars of scientific and industrial interest. The outcome of the project will be new validated algorithms for evaluating fracture parameters such as stress intensity factor, from both ESPI and image correlation data, directly from engineering components during service loading for a wide range of applications. This represents a significant advance due to the non-contacting, non-invasive nature of ESPI and image correlation compared to mare and photoelasticity which require special preparation of the surface with a grating or coating; or thermoelasticity which requires controlled, known loading and is expensive.
