Summary on Grant Application Form
European researchers are recognised as world-leaders in Symbolic Computation. Research is, however, fragmented acrtoss numerous small groups. There is conseuently significant replication of effort. Moreover, the communtiy is not in a position to take advantage of recent developments in Computer Science as offered by eg GRID computing. The EU Framework VI programme is intended to address such problems. The foundations for a Eurpoean Network will be established through holding international workshops, by visits to major researech centres, and providing appropraite infrastructure to ensure that a European proposal can be efficiently and effectively constructed. By being proactive in this way, the UK would also by able to take a leading role in such a Network, if funded. We will expoit the existing EPSRC-funded NET-CA network to coordinate UK effort behind this proposal.Even if no call is issued, or the Network is not funded as planned, this work will serve to reinforce the UKs position in European Symbolic Computation research, and to focus the community on a common research agenda.
