Summary on Grant Application Form
The electron spectroscopy facility at Daresbury Laboratory is equipped with a world-class XPS spectrometer - a Scienta ESCA300. EPSRC has taken policy decision to fund the operation of the facility by Responsive Grant Mode from April 2003. It has also recently completed a review of the service provided by the facilty and reported a very high level of satisfaction. As recommended by the review, the ESCA300 is now in need of upgrading in orc to sustain its role as a UK central resource for electron spectroscopy and surface analysis. This proposal therefore seeks funds to continue the operation of the facility and to extend the capability of the spectrometer to low photon energies for UPS studies of materials. Moreover, another proposal has recently been funded by EPSRC (GR/R66401/01) for provision of a W La x-ray source that will extend the high energy XPS capability. Overall the proposed upgrade will provide a unique world-class facility for photoelectron spectroscopy, with several fixed energy photon sources in the range 8400 - 20 eV.Under the arrangements envisioned here the amount of facility time available to EPSRC users will be greater by a factor of - 1.8 than under the pres Service Level Agreement, but with only a 23% increase in actual annual cost to EPSRC.
