Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme provides for the replacement and upgrading of equipment that underpins the ORC fabrication infrastructure in areas such as new glasses, holey fibres, fibre lasers, and integrated optical devices and the targeted expansion of areas involving microstructuring in glasses and crystals. Speck research themes include (1) compact low-power holey fibre devices for telecommunications, including high-power lasers, amplifiers and low-loss add-drop multiplexers, atom waveguide fibre devices and short-pulse X-ray sources for single molecule imaging, (ii) planar lightwave circuits including compact efficient amplifiers, high-power, tunable and modelocked waveguide lasers for telecommunications, machining and instrumentation, immunoassay chips for environmental and medical monitoring, and optical manipulation of cells in integrated fluidic circuits for bioanalytical applications, (iii) machining of crystals, glasses and metals at micron to sub-micron dimensions using 193nm excimer laser radiation, for applications in domain manipulation in ferroelectrics, micro-ablative removal of materials in planar and fibre geometries, photonic crystal structures, and writing into photosensitive glasses in the planar format (iv) realisation of novel athermal glasses for stable fibre and waveguide grating devices, broadband tellurite glass fibre amplifiers and bismuthate glass planar amplifiers and novel nonlinear glasses, fibres and waveguides for poling and holey fibre applications.
