Summary on Grant Application Form
With three main interdependent themes, the proposal is to develop the research on Group 13 metal hydrides pioneered and orchestrated at Oxford. SYNTHESIS of amido, imido or related Group 15 derivatives of AI, Ga or In with the potential to act as sources of the appropriate binary III-V compound. This will entail (a) metathesis or addition/elimination reactions starting from halide or organo derivatives of the metal, and (b) matrix reactions of the metal atoms or dimers, simple univalent derivatives, or compounds susceptible to decomposition, e.g. R(H)2N.GaH3 (R = H or an organic group).PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISATION of new compounds, with particular reference to structure, spectroscopic properties, aggregation, decomposition, complexation, and potential as synthetic reagents.MECHANISTIC STUDIES of thermal or photolytic reactions involving Group 13 metal atoms or dimers. or their univalent compounds, typically through matrix isolation, with IR spectroscopic detection, and quantum chemical calculations.
