The stereo-specificity of the interactions between chiral molecules will be investigated using high resolution rotational spectroscopy of weakly bound complexes formed between chiral (or potentially chiral) molecules. Species involved will contain -OH and -NH2 groups to model biological systems. The spectra of these species will enable the determination of the structure of the complex and hence the geometry of the potential minimum. Centrifugal distortion effects will provide information on the strength of the intermolecular bond.. Together these measurements should permit direct compariison of homochiral and heterochiral interactions.Since the spectra are likely to be complicated (with many monomer conformers present and with many rotational energy levels populated) significant simplifications can be obtained by observing the lower rotational transitions at low frequencies. For this purpose we plan to construct a novel low frequency microwave fourier transform spectrometer based on an enclosed cavity resonator.Considerable use will be made of high quality ab initio calculations to help interpret the spectra and to further investigate the stereo-specific nature of the intermolecular interactions.
