The proposal represents a collaboration between two industrial (Infineum and Uniqema) and two academic (Bristol Colloid Centre and University of East Anglia) research centres for consideration under the Sustainable Technology Initiative, supported by the DTI, the EPSRC and the ESRC. The systems to be studied are NanoDetergents, (which are colloidal particles of calcium carbonate stabilised by a layer of surfactant) and are added to lubricants to neutralise acids in combustion engines. The specific problem areas focus on i) attaining the required NanoDetergents properties (size, stability and neutralisation characteristics) through synthesis and ii) preventing unfavourable interaction with other amphiphilic additives. The parameters involved in the formation of Nanodetergents will be investigated, and a set of fundamental, predictive rules established for the tri-phasic (solid/ liquid/ gas) synthetic method. The second problem to be addressed will be an understanding of the interaction of NanoDetergents with other amphiphilic additives (such as friction modifiers and dispersants). This work will involve competitive adsorption studies of surfactant, and aims to prevent unfavourable interactions between components, which result in deposits and a failure in lubricant performance. Uniqema and Infineum both manufacture lubricant additives and the University of East Anglia and The Bristol Colloid Centre have expertise in the area of colloid science to be studied.
