Summary on Grant Application Form |
This study aims at further development of methods for the identification of multi-degree-of-freedom non-linear continuous systems. In particular, the Force Appropriation for Nonlinear Systems (FANS) and Resonant Decay for Non-linear Systems (RDNS) methods permit the classical modal space model used in linear systems to be extended with non-linear terms, by performing a series of low order identification problems. In initial evaluations, both methods show promise for handling high order non-linear continuous MIMO systems. The FANS approach requires development of a faster algorithm for adjustment of harmonics and an approach to identification of non-linear coupling terms. Both methods require accurate transformation between physical and modal space so improvement of this process by mode smoothing, use of subsets of modes and handling residual effects is necessary. In addition, semi-automation of the choice of excitation levels and curve fitting will be developed, with the help of an indicator for highlighting whether modes behave linearly or non-linearly, and which are non-linearly coupled. Both methods will be evaluated and compared upon simulated data with a range of error sources, and on real experimental structures.A method will be developed to identify the spatial location of non-linearities. The technology will be transferred to the aerospace industry.
