Summary on Grant Application Form
Air-borne blast waves from high explosives are difficult to measure experimentally. There is a scarcity of reliable experimental data relating to aii confined spaces or to geometric shapes such as corners or gaps found in everyday structures. The proposed programme will apply miniature fa response pressure sensors, to be developed by the Fibre Optics Group at Heriot-Watt University, in systematic trials at the experimental facility operated by the University of Sheffield. Pressure - time histories at the surfaces of model structures will be determined in response to air-blasts simple and complex waveforms. The small size fibre optic pressure sensors will enable a range of scale models to be tested, in order to investic limits of the scaling laws that govern blast loads on structures. Results will be used to validate models for computational methods for predicting loads, with ultimate application to military, civil and industrial structures.
