Summary on Grant Application Form
One of the key priority areas of the EC Framework VI programme is Nanotechnologies and Nanoscience with an emphasis on nanobiotechnologies including biomaterials and hybrid technologies. One of the main routes to addressing these priorities will be Networks of Excellence and a call for Expressions of Interest has been issued with a closing date of June 7' 2002. Travel funding is requested to enable the EPSRC Life Sciences Interface Network which we coordinate to host a meeting of interested European groups such that a highly focused and coherent Expression of Interest for the creation of a European Network of Excellence in Biomedical Nanotechnology can be produced. This visionary Network of Excellence would seek to combine nanotechnology with powerful molecular design and protein engineering techniques to develop nanoengineered, robust, communicative biological interfaces to the physical and information worlds. Aspects for Network activity to be discussed during the meeting would include: increasing pan-European interdisciplinary scientific and technological efforts; promotion of education and training in biomedical nanotechnology; stimulation of cooperation with and transfer to industry; facilitation of the application of nanotechnology to medical research. Obviously, this funding would significantly enhance the ability of the NANOMED network to play a key role in planning and coordinating future European research in this increasingly important area.
