For a precompact subset A of a Hilbert space we wish to obtain asymptotically optimal bounds for the Gelfand and Kolmogorov numbers of the absolutely convex hull of A, given that the entropy numbers of A have critical growth. We also intend to study an inequality for the entropy numbers of a map from a Hilbert space to a finite-dimensional space, and to obtain good estimates for the constant which appears in the inequality. These have considerable importance for applications, such as the estimation of performance bounds for statistical hypotheses and of support vector machines.
