We propose to construct a molecular-beam-based metal cluster source with external laser photoionization which will interface with a Fourier transform ion-cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass-spectrometer purchased recently for this purpose. A variety of techniques will be developed to elucidate the geometrical structures of the clusters produced and in particular the effect of the structure on the reactivity of the cluster towards small molecules. Small clusters of transition metals (typically <20 atoms) will be generated by laser vaporization and entrained in a pulsed supersonic expansion of a carrier gas. The geometrical and electronic structures of the clusters will be investigated by high-resolution photoionization methods involving the pulsed-field ionization of high molecular Rydberg states. In this manner it will be possible for the first time to ionize molecular clusters with isomeric selectivity for injection into the FTICR mass spectrometer. Kinetic studies performed within the FTICR cell will allow a determination of the effects of geometrical structure on the reactivity of clusters chosen for their catalytic importance.
