The programme of work will explore the applications of FTIR Imaging to study controlled drug release. Specifically, this proposal is aimed at elucidation of the dynamic processes in drug release from formulations in water-soluble polymers (diffusion, polymer degradation and drug release) via FTIR Imaging spectroscopy. This method relies on the ability of the Infrared array detector to simultaneously measure spectra from 4096 different locations in a sample. FTIR Imaging spectroscopy will be applied in situ for the first time to examine drug release from polymer/drug formulations by simultaneous measuring the large area at the interface between biodegradable polymers (containing drugs) and water as a function of time. A broader aim is to facilitate the use of spectroscopic FTIR imaging technology for preparation of solid dispersions by revealing the underlying principles of polymer/solvent interactions and its relevance to controlled drug release processes. Preliminary work has already been carried with a biodegradable polymer, and our results are very exciting and very promising.
