Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is to partially support a visit by Professor Haydock, from the University of Oregon, USA, to the Condensed Matter Theory Group of the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge. Professor Haydock will bring with him a library of recently developed programs for calculating the dynamics of strongly interacting electrons such those in ultra small semiconductor devices, magnetic materials, and superconductors. The Cambridge group has extensive experience with a number of strongly interacting systems on which the two group will test the new methods. The first step of the research is to access the programs from Cambridge, either installing them on a local computer or establishing communications with a computer at the University of Oregon specially designed for running these programs. Some of the systems for initial study are localized electrons in two and three-dimensional structures, which have interesting magnetic properties. More difficult problems include calculations of the electrical properties of unbound electrons at low density in ordered as well as disordered structures.
