Summary on Grant Application Form |
Injection moulding of short fibre reinforced thermoplastics an important industry area, particularly for safety-critical products such as automotive pedals. We propose a 2 year programme to study integration of computer modelling and experiment for design, injection moulding processing and product performance evaluation of reinforced polymer products. The proposed programme, for simple and complex geometry products, will be based upon existing precision injection moulding and fibre orientation characterisation facilities in the Bradford and Leeds IRC laboratories, together with industry trials, in collaboration with industrial partners. It builds upon a project involving assessment of prediction accuracy for fibre orientation in automotive pedals, which has demonstrated some key issues in the processing step, which is an excellent foundation for extending to the product design and performance stages. We will link with Prof C Tucker concerning fibre interactions during mould filling. Product strength modelling will build on previous work. In parallel with this main thread, a knowledge-based approach to design will be implemented, building upon research in progress at Warwick.
