Summary on Grant Application Form
We aim to obtain a fundamental understanding of the processing, structure and properties of functionally graded materials including composites manufactured using direct laser fabrication. The present project will use use simultaneous feed of powder of one composition and wire of a second composition to produce both functionally graded and composite materials. This will allow efficient use of materials since the powder will not be crosscontaminated and can be re-circulated. The materials that will be used are Ti-6-4 wire and powders of Ti25V-15Cr-2Al-0.2C to make functionally graded alloys and Ti-6-4 wire and powders of Ti2C and TiB to make functionally graded composites. This choice of materials has been made because we have good databases on the use of DLF to produce samples from powders of these two alloys and we understand from the work on Ti-25V-15Cr-2Al-0.2C the role of these particulate additions on the properties of bulk alloys. The properties of the individual composites will be compared with those expected and similarly the properties of the functionally graded samples will be compared with the properties expected from simple models.
