Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main purpose of this proposed grant is to exploit, from October 2002-2005, a new world class synchrotron station (MPW6.2 + RAPID2) so that it will be capable of collecting ultra-rapid medium-high resolution in situ diffraction data from materials while they are being synthesised or during subsequent in-service performance. This enabling process will involve the development of data collection/analysis protocols and the design/build of a versatile environmental cell/gas-handling system capable of operating up to -1,100C. The system will then be applied to examples taken from five sub-projects:* the synthesis of doped zirconia systems and their structural behaviour during reduction cycles; * cation-exchange, dehydration and calcination of clinoptilolites; * decomposition/crystallisation synthesis of ceramics from zeolites; . negative thermal expansion of aluminophosphate-based framework materials; * synthesis and structure evolution of silicon clathrates.Attempts will also be made to perform in situ experiments that involve combinations of technique (diffraction, SAXS, EXAFS, environmental cell monitoring).
