Summary on Grant Application Form |
We have recently developed a simple route to new complex metal oxides halides with the synthesis of seveal new layered materials (manganates and cobaltates); these materials show important electronic/magnetic properties allied to, for example, magnetoresistance, magnetic ordering in 2D systems and superconductivity. We intend to exploit this chemistry to produce a wealth of new layered oxide halide materials whose properties could be controlled through choice of transition metal, halide and the number of layers and their compostion. Effort will initially centre on a series of manganates Mn(III)/Mn(IV), cobaltates Co(II)/Co(III) and ferrates Fe(II)/(III) but will expand to investigate other systems of interest such as Ni and Rh. Post phase formation reaction to control electron counts and numbers will be studied in detail both in terms of physical properties and magnetic structure (using neutron diffraction). Through the used of the mixed anions systems a clearer understanding and control of magnetic interactions in low dimensional and multi-layer materials will be evident.
