Summary on Grant Application Form
SummaryDescribe the proposed research in about 200 words.High resolution synchrotron diffraction has provided information about the load distribution within TVSiC composites fibre by fibre for the first time. We intend to exploit our world wide lead in this field to evaluate the change in interfacial shear stress as a function of temperature and to measure the extent of fibre bridging/closure and fibre fracture in the vicinity of fatigue cracks. Until now it has not been possible to evaluate the rate at which load is transfered between matrix and fibres, except in model transparent polymeric composites. The mechanisms however are quite different for metallic matrix systems. Furthermore, is not known the extent to which the matrix/fibre interface becomes degraded during fatigue crack growth or as a function of temperature. All of this information is vital for a better understanding of the micromechanics of these systems upon which better finite element models will be built. These outcomes will be achieved by combining the synchrotron expertise of Manchester with the expertise in Birmingham on the fatigue of metal composites.
