UK Internet access is at the point of becoming an opportunity for the majority rather than the preserve of the minority. The Internet and the services it supports have also matured. Both Government and academics recognise that the consequences of Internet use for transport are likely to be significant but empirical evidence and understanding of the relationship between Internet use and personal travel (both of which can provide access to goods, services and opportunities) are scant. This research is intended to address this and builds upon the work and findings of a FIT feasibility study which identified and explored a 'triangle of influence' between personal travel, Internet use and social participation. The research will involve a detailed longitudinal panel study of c.100 people with Internet access. Participants will, at 6-monthly intervals, record for a 7-day period their daily on-line and offline activities (including travel and time use). With accompanying depth interviewing and questionnaires, the study will build a detailed profile of how and why the Internet is used by individuals, how this is changing over time and crucially how Internet use affects the amount of personal travel and patterns of traveller behaviour. To ensure this principal element of the project is set in context and to test the findings of the panel study, two large scale surveys involving a nationally representative sample of Internet users will be undertaken alongside scenario testing. The research aims to enable explicit and effective account to be taken of the Internet in the formulation of transport policies including those to promote a socially inclusive society.
