Dr. Mayer's expertise lies in the development of software, namely MIN3P, one of the most recent and complete tools to model reactive groundwater flow. Specifically this includes a comprehensive set of chemical reactions, also kinetic ones, unsaturated conditions, and accurate numerical methods. With Dr. Mayer we intend to assess how to identify the most relevant processes to be accounted for in intended field site modelling, e.g. for creosol degradation, by comparing different conceptual model approaches currently used by GPRG for MIN3P modelling of microcosm studies.Also we intend to start a joint project for developing a new module inside MIN3P to simulate reactive transport in a dual permeability medium. This shall be part of the work of one of the PhD students funded by the platform grant, and we need a close working relation to Dr. Mayer (who also owns the source code) to set the development in motion.Finally, we want to benefit from Dr. Mayer's experience in using accurate numerical methods and modelling natural attenuation processes in the unsaturated zone, and to outline intended field site modelling for two sites, probably '4 Ashes' and 'St. Albans', which differ in type of contaminant and aquifer properties.
