Polymer processing is an important area of manufacturing; in-process measurements for these viscoelastic fluids and solids is a challenging, interdisciplinary activity (e.g. across mechanical, chemical and electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, and in reacting systems, chemistry disciplines) yet one for which there is no academic focal point in the UK. This network will rectify this, providing coherence and a stronger national identity in the UK. There is a perceived and increasing requirement for improved process control, which requires improved process measurement, in particular here in polymer processing. All forms of batch or continuous processing (fluid or solid phase) can benefit from in-process measurements, to provide 1-d, 2-d and 3-d data for process analyses and control of these processes, and validation for process modelling. It is clear that such multivariable processes urgently need enhanced information for these ends - and also to help bridge the gap between in-process measurement and product quality assessments. This network will interact with and complement the recently formed DTI In-Process Measurement programme for industry (some 40 companies) which is hosted at Bradford. The manufacturing machine of the future will be increasingly required to incorporate intelligence - there will be convergence of computer monitoring, process analysis and modelling, incorporated into the process line. The full range of polymer processing operations, together with extensions beyond polymers, is represented by the collaborators. The Network will maintain an 'open door' policy to all interested UK researchers.
